A Population Crisis
Are abortion “bans” extreme?
No. In fact, did you know that the United States is one of only eight United Nations (UN) member countries without any federal laws or limits on abortion for gestational age?
That means that 185 out of 193 UN member countries limit abortion at some point during pregnancy. Even 46 of the 50 European Union countries ban abortion after 15 weeks, some even earlier.(1) In America, if you support any restrictions on abortion, you’re often attacked and called extreme when most of the countries in the world restrict abortion at some point during pregnancy.
With birthrates falling, maybe humanity shouldn’t be so cavalier about abortion. The World Health Organization reports that 29% of all pregnancies end in abortion, with a total of 73 million abortions worldwide each year.(2)
Many countries are facing a population crisis with birthrates well below the replacement rate of 2.2 per woman:(3)
Europe: 1.40
North America: 1.60
South America: 1.81
Asia: 1.88
Oceania: 2.14
Africa: 4.07
